About the St. Pius X Mission Club
With an established food pantry in June of 2023, residents within the geographical boundaries of the parish have year-round access to food if they’re hungry, drink if they’re thirsty and even warm clothing accessories if they’re cold. With a convenient drop-off location in the Church Gathering Area, parishioners can donate items requested throughout the year. To maximize the assistance the parish can provide and ensure efficiency in service; the Mission Club collaborates with Food Net who provides food to supplement what our generous parishioners provide.
Mission Club – HELP LINE: 337-232-0769
The Mission Club at St. Pius X allows parishioners, visitors and guests to make a charitable donation to those in need. During the hours of life’s most challenging moments, this ministry then gives back to the parish and civic community with a whole heart. No need is overlooked. The Mission Club is a volunteer-led ministry that serves roughly 150 families each year, or up to 240 families when disasters like the 2016 flood hit the Lafayette community.
Current and/or past initiatives of the Mission Club include:
- Holiday Food Baskets & Gifts: Each year for Thanksgiving and Christmas the Mission Club, with the help of the Knights of Columbus and other volunteers, collects food to fill food baskets for parishioners in need. It also implements a Giving Tree initiative where parishioners can sponsor other families in need by taking an envelope with the name of a parishioner in need, as well as his/her Christmas wish list.
- Emergency Financial Assistance: This effort helps to provide something as simple as a bag of groceries or help with a utility bill. Emergency financial assistance is provided to qualified people in extreme need who live in the 70508 area. A Help Line (337-232-0769) has been established so that the volunteers may access messages left by those in need. Anyone outside the 70508 area are referred to another agency.
- Disaster Relief: Disaster Relief support is provided to parishioners in need of home repairs or clean-up and restoration efforts due to fire or flood damage. On occasion and when funding allows, Disaster Relief support is also extended to neighboring areas in times of great need.
- Seminarian Support: When one of St. Pius X Church’s seminarians are in need of financial assistance for an unforeseen or emergency expense, the Mission Club allows the parish to support them with various expenses such as travel or transportation expenses, food, books, or any other need not covered by their scholarships.
- Other: Upon request, the Mission Club also donates to funeral homes to help with the cost of the funeral expenses of those in need. The ministry also extends its hands past the Lafayette civic community by working with foreign missions, including assisting parishioner’s with their mission trip expenses. Other efforts supported in the past include scholarships or licensing, travel (car repair, bus tickets, car rental, air fare) moving expenses (for a new job), clothing expenses, and hearing aids.
Additionally, local charitable organizations are served through the Mission Club’s efforts each year as well.
