Financial blessings are a gift to us from a loving God. We are asked to consider giving to God from our first fruits and not our leftovers. We are asked to give an amount proportionate to what God has given to us. Many find that through their giving, their faith is deepened, and they become more enriched spiritually and materially.
Our decision to give may require prayer and discernment, or time to adequately plan. Our giving may be something we need to work towards in order to reorient our priorities. Some of us may wish to increase our giving while others who take smaller baby steps are still taking a giant leap of faith. Again, there is no “right” or “wrong” amount. In determining our offering, it is good to reflect on our motives and dispositions in determining the amount of our regular offering. The following items are intended to assist in your reflection:
The offering should be thoughtful and made after prayerful consideration, as opposed to arbitrary or impulsive.
The offering should be generous, as it is only giving back what has already been received.
The offering should be substantial (as opposed to a token), showing the value we place on our spiritual life and the sacramental services provided by our church.
The offering should be appreciative, giving thanks to God for the gifts He has given to us.
The offering should be regular and disciplined, habitually keeping in our mind God's gifts to us.
The offering should be sacrificial (it is good if we can point to something we gave up to make the offering).
The offering should be in joyful spirit, in other words, we are "glad to do it."
The offering should not prevent us from meeting our obligations or cause undue hardship.
The intention card below is designed to help us answer His call to give. Sometimes it helps to write things down or we may wish to return the card as a formal offering of our intent. Others may prefer to keep their commitment private. Since our commitment is only between us and our loving God, there is also an option to anonymously submit our card.
